BLOOD PRESSURE

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
FOR MANY IT’S ONLY A MATTER OF WHEN

You probably know someone with hypertension (high blood pressure) if they are over 50 or 60 years of age. Of course you yourself may either have it or are becoming concerned about it. By now you most likely know that it could lead to heart disease and eventually a heart attack.
The Center for Disease Control reports that 67 million Americans have high blood pressure. Worse yet, only 31 million are controlling it.

AGE CAN LEAD TO HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

Like most of the issues dealing with our circulatory system, hypertension issues do not develop all of a sudden. The recognizable symptoms that really get your attention might seem to develop over a short period of time. In reality, as you get older your blood vessels tend to be less flexible. As they stiffen, the blood does not flow as freely causing the heart to have to pump just a little bit harder and the pressure begins to increase. Over time, the pressure can increase more and more reaching unhealthy levels. There is some evidence that this could be the result of high cholesterol.
The medical community typically would believe that hypertension is in an acceptable range if blood pressure is less than 120/80. The first number refers to your systolic blood pressure. That is the measurement of the pressure as your blood is flowing away from the heart to the rest of your body. The second number refers to your diastolic pressure. That is the measurement of the pressure as your blood is returning to the heart (via the lungs, kidneys, and liver).

YOU CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT
IF YOU DON’T KNOW YOU HAVE IT

Should these levels begin to increase, it would be important to consider some form of action to slow or stop the increase. Now, here is a big part of the problem. Most of us do not pay any attention to our levels. Unless we have some reason to visit a doctor we might go for years without knowing what our blood pressure is. Because of this high blood pressure is often referred to as the “silent killer”.
Although there can be a significant increase in blood pressure without any sign, one should heighten their level of interest in blood pressure levels if they begin to suffer from headaches, seem to tire easily, or perhaps become confused at times. Other signs might include nose bleed, ringing in the ears or changes in ones vision.
For some, a high blood pressure diet can help a lot. Left uncared for, hypertension can result in a number of different ailments that could become life threatening. As a result, one might experience a stroke, or a heart attack. Short of that, continued stress from high blood pressure can result in heart disease possibly kidney problems. Any of these of course could ultimately result in death.

WHAT IS BLOOD PRESSURE?

The heart forces blood into the arteries creating blood pressure. All parts of our body are filled with arteries delivering blood. The body would not function without the delivery of oxygen and nutrients by the blood. As the heart pumps blood out into the arteries pressure is created. The blood pushes against the walls as it is moved throughout the body. The heart pumps out blood some 60 to 70 times each minute when the body is at rest. The pressure on the arteries is at its highest when the heart beats, pumping blood into the system. When the pressure is measured at this point it is referred to as systolic pressure.

As the heart rests between beats, the pressure on the walls decreases. When the pressure is measured at this point it is referred to as diastolic pressure. When one has their pressure taken, the pressure is referred to as two numbers. When they are quoted or written the first number is the systolic reading and the following number the diastolic reading. One might see this as 120/80 mmHg. Most often it would be read or quoted as 120 over 80.As one would expect, pressure changes throughout the day being the lowest when one sleeps. It naturally will rise when one awakens and becomes active. The more strenuous the activity; the higher the blood pressure.During most of the day our pressure is fairly constant and doesn’t change much as a result of normal activity such as sitting or standing. If one becomes excited or nervous the pressure most often rises.

Typically only a few would be diagnosed with having low blood pressure. It is most often thought that normal blood pressure should be lower than 120/80. One is considered to have high blood pressure if it is greater than 140/90. As the pressure increases the walls of the arteries are subject to being damaged.Follow the links to learn about the problems when the pressure is too high and what symptoms you should be watching for.

BLOOD PRESSURE
 – The heart doesn’t get to rest ike other muscles in our body.  It only rests between each beat.

NORMAL HEALTH – In seniors, ten to fifteen percent of visits to emergency rooms are the result of reactions to medications.

CHRONIC DISEASE – One out of three adults suffer from chronic disease.

VITAMIN D FOR FLU
– The immune system needs an assist to ward off or minimize affect of flu.
