HEART ATTACKOVER ONE MILLION PEOPLE SUFFER FROM A HEART ATTACK EACH YEAR One of the levels of lethal progression a person might certainly experience unless proper attention is given to ones health. Permanent damage to the heart muscle occurs during a heart attack. The heart in many ways is similar to any other muscle in your body. Of course, one primary difference is that the heart is a pump. The heart muscle needs a constant supply of oxygen-rich blood. This is supplied by the blood pumped into the coronary arteries. People with coronary artery disease have arteries that have narrowed and blood flow has been restricted. This is often caused by the build up inside the arteries of fatty matter, calcium, proteins, and inflammatory cells causing plaque deposits. . Should one not give attention to this condition it could very well lead to heart disease. While the plaque itself doesn’t cause the attack, the hard plaque outer shell will crack and particles in the blood that aid clotting move to the area forming blood clots around the plaque. Should a blood clot completely block the artery, the heart muscle is starved of oxygen and heart muscle cells die resulting in permanent damage. It is important that people should be aware of heart attack symptoms. Often they are not aware that they are, or have had, a heart attack. Lack of attention to the symptoms could lead to further damage and the result could be heart failure. It is of course not uncommon for someone to have such an attack as a result of having …congestive heart failure. HEART ATTACK DAMAGE The damage to the muscle of the heart depends on the size of the area supported by the blocked artery. The amount of damage is also dependent upon the time lapse between the event and its treatment. Similar to a wound on the skin, the damage to the heart muscle will heal. The repair begins quickly forming a scar in the damaged area. The heart does lose some ability to pump blood as the new scar tissue does not contract. The size and location of the scar impact the amount of lost pumping ability. IF ONE HAS A HEART ATTACK WHAT SHOULD THEY DO? The most important action would be to reduce the amount of damage by opening the blocked artery. One should always call for emergency treatment at the first signs. The optimum time for treatment would be within one to two hours after the beginning of the symptoms. The damage to the heart increases should one wait any longer and the danger of survival increases. Discomfort in the chest can be experienced many ways. Be aware of any discomfort in the chest – the arms- the back – or the jaw. These may be heart disease warning signs and it may be necessary to seek immediate medical care. |
