You would logically think that the company that is producing the product you plan to buy would provide the answer as to how much CBD you should take. However, the companies are not allowed to suggest how much you should take due to government restrictions. Should they do so they would most likely soon be under investigation.
While there have been some attempts at setting guidelines, the amount of CBD to take should really be governed by an individuals needs. First, one should assess the reason for taking CBD. Some plan to take it to help with their feeling of "well-being". Well-being is the experience of health, happiness, and prosperity. It includes having good mental health, high life satisfaction, and a sense of meaning or purpose. More generally, well-being is just feeling well. For those who do not have this sense of well-being there have been some studies that concluded that CBD might be helpful for them. For some, it might just be a matter of being able to relax and get a good nights sleep. For others, the issue of mental health might be a little more complex.
Many people are looking for some relief of physical symptoms. And, many are reportedly getting relief from the pain of arthritis or perhaps from pain as the result of surgery by using CBD. Others are looking for relief from back pain, from neck pain, or relief of muscular discomfort. Inflammation is often a source of discomfit for many people. Some are looking to CBD to help.
Remember that with the use of CBD you are looking to affect the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our bodies. Most of us have no idea what that is. In order for our body to work at its most optimum level ECS is busy regulating our sleeping, what we eat, and inflammation, as well as how our brain is performing its cognitive function. Many results have been noted of the use of CBD in regulating the endocannabinoid system for issues such as anxiety and chronic pain as well as cardiovascular issues, including hypertension. Positive benefits for insomnia have been shown as well.
One should give consideration to the reason for taking CBD. Generally it is recommended that a new user should start taking a relatively low dosage. The effect of a dosage of CBD can vary from person to person and equal dosages might be different dependent on the ailment. One other factor to consider is that some people might notice a beneficial affect in a short period of time while for others it might require several days or more.
There are basically three methods available for taking CBD. Oil is the most common and is consumed by placing the liquid under the tongue. One should not touch any part of the mouth or tongue with the dropper. Consider placing the oil in a spoon and then placing it under the tongue. In addition to oil, CBD is also available in capsule or gummie form. The capsule would take a little longer to enter the blood stream through the stomach. Gummies placed in the mouth may be placed under the tongue, however while faster than a capsule, the absorption rate takes longer than oil.
CBD is available in various dosages. Oil is typically available in 20 or 30ml, bottles. The CBD dosage is in milligrams. This is fairly straight forward in capsules and Gummies. With oil, the typical dosage is one mL per dropper. The amount of CBD varies dependent upon the strength one purchases.
Capsules and gummies vary in dosages depending upon the supplier. They could range from dosages of 10, 15, 25, 50, or more each. Some are offered in quantities of 30, while others might package 20 per container. Some suppliers may quote the total CBD per container instead of the individual dosage.
CBD oil is provided in various quantities and various strengths. Functional Remedies CBD oil comes in bottles containing 30mL of oil. Highland Pharms oil is in bottles containg 25mL. Very often the bottle comes with a dropper that when filled has one mL of oil. If your dropper is one mL, you can calculate the mg of CBD in one full dropper by dividing the stated total mg of CBD in the bottle by the total mL content of the bottle.
HOW MUCH TO TAKE
For somewhat minor issues, such as a mild type of anxiety, one would start with a low dose. One could purchase a bottle of 250mg oil. A 30 mL bottle would provide 8.33mg in a once ounce dropper. Some might prefer to use capsules or gummies. The stated content is simple to follow. Gummies offer the additional option of being able to cut them if half to reduce the dosage.
For those who are suffering from arthritis or chronic pain, one might start with a somewhat higher dosage. A one ounce dropper in a 30mL bottle of 500mg provides 16.67mg of CBD; a bottle of 1,000 provides 33.33mg in a one ounce dropper.
CBD, like other natural supplements may take some time to provide the expected benefit. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs that contain additives (often toxic and with side affects) to prompt a much faster effect, natural supplements can sometimes take a little longer for one to experience the benefit. If one is not getting the expected relief, patience is sometimes required as the endocannabinoid system responds to the CBD.

We have researched a number of suppliers, and in the process used some CBD from sources we would not want you to use. There are a large number of suppliers who are simply packaging product that is not properly sourced or processed. You will want to acquire product from companies that have developed a good reputation and are not in the business to simply make a quick profit. Too many products on the market are from low grade hemp and are extracted in a process that does not result in a high quality product. These vendors are typically selling a low grade isolate product.
You might ask where the raw hemp product comes from. Hemp is a very common plant that grows all over the world and has many industrial uses. In many places hemp is not welcome and is commonly referred to as a weed. Hemp that is grown for industrial purposes most likely does not include high grade cannabinoids. A hemp that produces high grade cannabinoids needs to grow in the right kind of soil and in the right kind of weather. Too many providers of CBD use hemp that is not grown in ideal soil and weather to produce high grade cannabinoid. The most ideal provider would be one who is vertically integrated. One who grows the hemp used in the product.
The most reputable suppliers of CBD most often do not offer a isolate product. It is however a product that many might believe is the best as it is the very simple form of CBD, therefore and isolate. An isolate does not include any of the other oils in the hemp plant. While there may be some pain relieving benefits from CBD isolate, one should not expect the benefits one can experience from a "FULL SPECTRUM" product.
A full spectrum product is one that includes extract from the whole hemp plant. Hemp, not to be confused with it's relative marijuana, has a large number of phytonutrients. While the end product is commonly referred to as CBD, the full spectrum hemp product includes many other cannabinoids that improve the efficacy of CBD. This is accomplished by using all of the plant; the flower, the stems, etc. The more common ones are referred to as CBC, CBG and CBN. It is highly recommended that you use a full spectrum product, not the lower cost, lower effective isolate products.
The process that a CBD provider uses to extract the cannabinoids can have an affect on the quality of the end product. Many, if not most, use a process that degrades the efficacy of the content of the plant. A extraction process should be a mild, non-damaging process to insure the highest quality phytonutrients.
Most reputable providers have their products analyzed by a third party to insure the accuracy of the ingredients. Some providers will include the lot number of the product and some will offer the opportunity to trace the lot number.
Finally, we might once again mention the reputation of the provider. One can often determine a providers reputation by reviewing their website. A quality provider will provide a significant amount of information about not only CBD but also about the process involved in the product they sell.
We oftentimes are taken aback when we read about a supplement that is used in our regular diet that if taken as an extract can have a most beneficial effect on our long term health. In 2017 a study involved a comprehensive review of nutraceuticals that have "clinically detectable" blood pressure-lowering effects. The compound S-allylcysteine in aged garlic extract enhanced the regulation of nitric oxide, which in turn induces smooth muscle-cell relaxation, vasodilation, and blood pressure reduction.
A review published in the Journal of Nutrition that assessed numerous randomized, controlled, human trials over a 58 year period found that aged garlic extract reduced systolic blood pressure by an average 4.1 mmHg.

As the advancements in the formulation of curcumin too provide much higher absorbability by the body, along with passing it through the blood-brain barrier, we continue to hear more about the benefits of this great supplement. For years, many studies have shown that curcumin has the ability to assist the body with many health issues. Unfortunately this was only done in the lab inasmuch as when taking raw curcumin, most of it simply passes through the body without entering into the blood stream.
Unfortunately, many people are still hoping for benefits of curcumin by continuing to take older formulations that are not nearly as effective and may not be resulting in the health benefits they are looking for. Many people take turmeric based on the fact that it is the plant that contains curcumin. There are two issues here, one is that there is a very small amount of curcumin in the turmeric, and two, very little of the small amount of curcumin is actually absorbed by the body. Curcumin is not water-soluble making it very difficult for the body to absorb it.
Others realize that it would be more beneficial to take a product that contains raw curcumin that has been extracted from the turmeric root. As stated above this does not result in any significant benefit. There has been a improvement in absorption of curcumin using a bio-perrine (pepper) process, but still it results in a very small amount being absorbed by the body.

If I decide to take curcumin in capsule form, should I choose pure curcumin or a formulation?
There are many formulations on the market. If you decide to take curcumin for a disease peripheral to the brain such as arthritis, any formulation may suffice. (However, curcumin is not easily absorbed by the body. Raw curcumin would result in a very small amount of curcumin available to the body).* There are two essential criteria to consider, first, is there evidence that the formulation will lead to adequate curcumin levels in the target tissue?, and second is the formulation manufactured by a company with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). (A third would be that the product can be readily absorbed into the blood stream and allowed to pass through the blood-brain barrier of the brain).*
Since curcumin is a metal chelator it can chelate toxic metals like lead in the ground. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if the manufacturer is a GMP company, because your are purchasing the product from the distributor, not the manufacturer. Several manufacturers claim superior absorption, but it is important to view the data used to make these conclusions. Typically these data show detection of increased glucuronidated (tagged for removal by the kidneys are limited penetration to the brain) but do not assess untagged curcumin, which is permeable to the brain. In other words, data demonstrating superior absorption as measured by liver-tagged curcumin poorly predicts levels achieved in the brain.
In contrast, untagged or free curcumin readily penetrates the brain and free curcumin levels in the blood correlate positively with levels in the brain in animal studies. Dr. Frautschy received a National Institute of Health drug development grant U01AG028583, to develop a formulation of curcumin that can be taken orally and penetrate the brain.
This led to development of a solid lipid particle formulation of curcumin patented by UC Regents and Veteran's Affairs and licensed to Verdure Sciences as Longvida.

What is curcumin?
Curcumin, is an anti-inflammatory molecule in the turmeric root, a relative of ginger. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal preparation and a preservative and coloring agent in foods. Curcumin was isolated as the major yellow pigment in turmeric; chemically diferulomethane, and has a polyphenolic molecular structure similar to other plant pigments (eg. extracted from grapes in wine (resveratrol), or in green tea (catechins) or in certain fruit juices (blueberries, strawberries, pomegranates etc.) This polyphenols share in common anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties with associated health benefits
Can eating turmeric-based curries, increase curcumin levels in the blood?
India has a low incidence and prevalance of Alzheimer's, which may be related to genetics or a particular intake of specific foods. Some people attribute the low incidence of Alzheimer's to a high intake of turmeric in Asia. As turmeric contains an average of 5-10% curcumin, the daily intake of curcumin is approximated in India is thought be about 125 mg. Importantly incooking curries, curcumin is often dissolved and extracted into fat, eg. ghee, which may increase its bioavailability. Animal studies have demonstrated that the way it is administered affects its distribution in the body. Unformulated curcumin, such as purified and dried curcumin in a capsule, is absorbed easily but the liver and GI tract tag it in a way that make it not very bioavailable to the brain. There is a lot of confusion about curcumin bioavailability versus absorption. Curcumin is absorbed, but not necessarily bioavailable. Further GI and liver glucuronidation or sulfation "tagged curcumin" which interfere with bioavailability it some tissues also leadds to its rapid removal by the kidneys. Unliked tagged curcumin, free curcumin readily crossed the blood brain barrier and is relatively stable.
To increase free curcumin and its half life, one company Sabinsa has used the strategy to reduce curcumin's clearance by inhibiting glucuronidation using piperine (Sabinsa C3 complex). Glucuronidation is a method to to rid the body of toxins and remove metabolized drugs. Therefore one should determine blood levels of currently used medications after taking this formulation for several days.
Other proposed strategies are to increase its solubility (Meriva), or to encapsulate and protect it from hydrolysis and to control where in the intestine it is absorbed (Longvida).
In summary curcumin is easily absorbed but not necessarily very bioavailable to the brain (such as dissolved in cooking oils or formulated). It is stable in fatty tissues such as the brain, but not in blood.

How much curcumin should I take?
The short answer is 'we do not know the dose needed'. The answer to this question will also depend on how you take it, if you take it on an empty stomach, whether you dissolve it or not and whether and how it is formulated. Unlike drugs, one cannot determine the dose needed for curcumin unless one knows the tissue levels achieved for that formulation. Clinical trials for each each disease and each stage and each formulation would need to be conducted to identify effective tissue levels and that information will be needed to be able to recommend required dosing. In animals levels of 0.6 micromolar are sufficient to reduce amyloid pathology. If effective for prevention and treatment of MCI and Alzheimer's, the dose required may depend on stage. Extrapolation from animals studies suggest that a range of 4-8 capsules of 500 mg Longvida (125 mg of curcumin) per day may be efficacious; however the dose for prevention may be much less, even 80 mg/day, as suggested in the Ohio State University study If effective for prevention, treatment of MCI, treatment of Alzheimer's, the dose required may depend on stage. A published study from DiSilvestro et al. at Ohio State University, showed daily intake of 80 curcumin from Longvida reduced plasma levels of beta-amyloid as well as cholesterol and markers of inflammation plasma in subjects 40-60 years old.
Extensive toxicology conducted by the National Toxicology Program demonstrated that turmeric oleoresin (80% curcumin) is safe. As described in Title 21, Section 182.20 turmeric oleoresin is listed as one of the oils or oleoresins in plants as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) FDA's GRAS list. The European Food Safety Commission (EU), which has stricter requirements than the FDA for food safety, has also designated curcumin as safe.
However formulations that increase the free form also need to be tested for safety. Longvida Toxicity studies on Longvida find similar safety as compared to unformulated curcumin.
We are conducting a clinical trial to determine if Longvida is effective in Mild Cognitive Impairment on Brain Glucose Metabolism and Inflammatory Biomarkers. We have chosen s dose based on extrapolation from animal studies based on doses needed for neuroprotection and neuro anti-inflammatory properties testing whether 8 capsules daily may be sufficient. As with any drug, it is recommended to titer up to a dose slowly (1-2 capsules daily) then 2-4 capsules 2nd week and so on. Dose may depend on individual variabliity in absorption and formulation. Blood levels of free and metabolized curcumin are not typically measured, but are important to understand efficacious dose. Red blood cell or white blood cell (Buffy Coat) levels of free curcumin parallel brain levels, but not necessarily plasma levels, as plasma levels can be non-detectable when brain levels are high (Begum et al). It has a very short half life in plasma but a very long half life in brain because it is lipophilic (fat-loving) corresponding to its much higher concentrations in the fatty brain tissue than in blood.
When in relation to a meal should I take curcumin to limit its metabolism?
Fasting improves free curcumin absorption (eg. minimum of 3 hours after a meal). You make take it with a small drink (4-6 ounces; eg. cherry juice with a higher pH making it more soluble. Wait an hour before eating a meal. HOWEVER, ancectodal evidence suggests that some people may have sleep disturbances if taken before bedtime.
How will I know if curcumin is working?
Since there is no trial demonstrating effectiveness of curcumin in preventing Alzheimer's, we don't know how to answer this question until the trials have been conducted and completed. Anecdotal evidence suggests that slowly titering up and conducting self-administered memory tests can be helfpul in determining if it is helpful and at what dose. Some people use solitaire to monitor improvements. There maybe also be online tests to document memory changes. Since it takes 10 days to build up levels of curcumin in tissues, it may be important to titer up or down at 10 day intervals.
An immediate effect on memory has been describe anectdotally, but it would not necessarily be expected. In mouse studies spatial memory was measured after three months treatment. The most obvious initial effect would be a reduction in symptoms of joint pain or other inflammatory conditions. In one trial described here, only unformulated curcumin was used and free curcumin was relatively undetectable. Importantly, in extended results from the naproxen trial for Alzheimer's prevention, naproxen showed prevention of conversion to Alzheimer's; however, during the first year subjects’ memory worsened. It has not yet been determined whether lowering the dose until symptoms subside might avoid these deteriorations. Considering that we know that in animals curcumin clears out toxic amyloid and tau aggregates, it could conceivably transiently worsen memory. Although transient worsening of memory has not been observed in animals, it has been anecdotally been reported by some patients.
If I am considering taking curcumin with other nutraceuticals, what cocktail can I take?
Animal studies suggest that curcumin and fish oil synergize. It is very difficult to identify the nutraceuticals that synergize and those that counteract each other. Therefore, when exploring nutraceuticals it is important to add one at a time, for example at a minimum of 10-day intervals and monitor its effects.
Should I take DHA and curcumin together if I know I have the ApoE4 allele, making me at risk for Alzheimers? What form of DHA and how much?
Again clinical studies are necessary. Data suggest that subjects with E4 do not respond to DHA, which may be due to oxidation. It is possible that Curcumin or other antioxidants may enable ApoE4 to respond to DHA. A combination of pure DHA with fish oil would achieve a higher DHA to EPA ratio to avoid EPA competing for DHA incorporation into neuron membranes. The rationale for combining fish oil and DHA is that fish oil contains EPA, which may reduce risk for cardiovascular disease.
600-900 mg of DHA is recommended. Higher doses were used in the trial but there is saturation at 900 mg/day. One gram of fish oil has about 200 mg of DHA, so one could take 3-5 capules of fish oil. Or 2 capsules of Fish oil and 1 capsule of pure "algae" DHA. Fish oil impacts platelets, so watch for bruising and if on plavix, warfarin or related blood thinners, make sure to check clotting and adjust blood thinner appropriately.

Daily consumption of a certain form of curcumin — the substance that gives Indian curry its bright color — improved memory and mood in people with mild, age-related memory loss, according to the results of a study conducted by UCLA researchers.
The research, published online Jan. 19 in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, examined the effects of an easily absorbed curcumin supplement on memory performance in people without dementia, as well as curcumin’s potential impact on the microscopic plaques and tangles in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.
Found in turmeric, curcumin has previously been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in lab studies. It also has been suggested as a possible reason that senior citizens in India, where curcumin is a dietary staple, have a lower prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and better cognitive performance.
“Exactly how curcumin exerts its effects is not certain, but it may be due to its ability to reduce brain inflammation, which has been linked to both Alzheimer’s disease and major depression,” said Dr. Gary Small, director of geriatric psychiatry at UCLA’s Longevity Center and of the geriatric psychiatry division at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, and the study’s first author.
The double-blind, placebo-controlled study involved 40 adults between the ages of 50 and 90 years who had mild memory complaints. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a placebo or 90 milligrams of curcumin twice daily for 18 months.
All 40 subjects received standardized cognitive assessments at the start of the study and at six-month intervals, and monitoring of curcumin levels in their blood at the start of the study and after 18 months. Thirty of the volunteers underwent positron emission tomography, or PET scans, to determine the levels of amyloid and tau in their brains at the start of the study and after 18 months.
The people who took curcumin experienced significant improvements in their memory and attention abilities, while the subjects who received placebo did not, Small said. In memory tests, the people taking curcumin improved by 28 percent over the 18 months. Those taking curcumin also had mild improvements in mood, and their brain PET scans showed significantly less amyloid and tau signals in the amygdala and hypothalamus than those who took placebos.
The amygdala and hypothalamus are regions of the brain that control several memory and emotional functions.
Four people taking curcumin, and two taking placebos, experienced mild side effects such as abdominal pain and nausea.
The researchers plan to conduct a follow-up study with a larger number of people. That study will include some people with mild depression so the scientists can explore whether curcumin also has antidepressant effects. The larger sample also would allow them to analyze whether curcumin’s memory-enhancing effects vary according to people’s genetic risk for Alzheimer’s, their age or the extent of their cognitive problems.
“These results suggest that taking this relatively safe form of curcumin could provide meaningful cognitive benefits over the years,” said Small, UCLA’s Parlow-Solomon Professor on Aging.

First Things First: Why Do we Age?Scientists aren’t exactly sure why we age, but multiple theories exist. One is the mitochondrial theory of aging. It states that the root cause of aging is oxidative stress to the mitochondria.
Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of cells. Their job is to produce ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate), the energy currency of all cells. During production, however, free radicals are formed, an effect that damages mitochondria.
Through time, the mitochondria in your cells “take a beating” … their numbers eventually decrease, making you vulnerable to the effects of aging and disease. In fact, many diseases we associate with growing old (type II diabetes, Alzheimer’s, heart failure, and cancer1-5) are actually associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.
Luckily, certain nutrients can help.
CoQ10 Extends the Lives of AnimalsA house can’t run without energy, and neither can your body. That’s where CoQ10 comes into play. This vitamin-like substance helps the mitochondria “burn fuel” more effectively. It helps the energy transfer needed to make ATP. Without it, mitochondria become dysfunctional and aging accelerates.6
CoQ10 supplementation has been shown to extend the lives of different species. It lowers the oxidative stress inflicted on mitochondria. In one study, mice given CoQ10 lived 11.7% years longer,7 which is approximately 9 human extra years based on today’s life expectancy (78.5 years).

Carnitine guards nerve cells against damage. A particular form called acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) prevents the accumulation of amyloid plaque, an abnormal protein implicated in Alzheimer’s disease.13 It also enhances cognition. In different studies, elderly people taking ALCAR show improved memory and mental status scores.14-15
Your heart needs carnitine to function optimally. Decreased levels weaken the heart, compromising function. In one study, heart attack survivors taking carnitine showed decreased blood pressure levels, improved lipids, and a decreased death rate compared to a placebo group (12.5% versus 1.2%).16

MIT researchers discovered and patented magnesium L-threonate based on its unique ability to boost brainlevels of magnesium.

A recent human study demonstrates the benefits of magnesium L-threonate in adults with cognitive dysfunction, sleep disorders, and anxiety.1
The most startling finding is a reversal of more than nine years in clinical measures of brain aging in people who supplemented with magnesium L-threonate.
Magnesium L-threonate (MgT) was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.2
MgT (pronounced “Mag T”) is special because of the way it boosts brain magnesium levels when taken orally. This effect is due to its unique ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.2
Research has shown that once MgT gets into the brain, it increases the density of synapses, which are the communication connections between brain cells.1

Published Human Data
Scientists at three independent institutions carried out a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial of MgT in older adults with cognitive impairment.1
To participate in the study, candidates had to be between the ages of 50 and 70, and have self-reported complaints of memory problems, sleep disorders, and anxiety.1
This study was based on the premise that sleep and anxiety disorders correlate with perceived memory loss.7 Those who report mild cognitive impairment and who also have sleep and anxiety disorders are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.1,8-11
In this multi-center study, participants were randomly assigned to receive placebo or magnesium L-threonate in the dose of 1,500-2,000 mg each day (depending on body weight) for 12 weeks.
Baseline cognitive testing commenced before people started taking MgT or placebo. These cognitive tests were then repeated at six-week and 12-week points.1
The following four separate tests were used to evaluate cognitive function:
• Executive function
• Working memory
• Episodic memory (ability to recall fleeting events)
Findings from this study revealed:
1. MgT improved body magnesium status. After 12 weeks researchers found significant increases in red blood-cell concentration and in urinary excretion of magnesium in the treated group.1 Increased urinary excretion indicates that large amounts of magnesium have been absorbed, while increased levels in red blood cells show high circulating levels of magnesium in the body.
2. MgT improved cognitive abilities. Using a test of visual attention and task switching, researchers saw significant increases in performance speed for executive function and cognitive processing. These benefits appeared as early as week six on some of the tests.1 Most tellingly, the overall composite scores for all tests of the MgT-supplemented group increased significantly compared with baseline scores and with those of placebo recipients at weeks six and 12.
3. MgT reduced fluctuation in cognitive ability. When cognitive functions are worse on some days than others, it is a warning sign of developing mild cognitive impairment.12,13 In the present study, while placebo recipients showed considerable fluctuation in their cognitive scores, those in the MgT group had primarily positive changes.1
4. MgT reversed clinical measures of brain aging. This is a significant finding, which we’ll explain in more detail in the next section.

Neuroscientists at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine teamed up with researchers at the National Institute on Aging to identify core mechanisms that contribute to Alzheimer’s disease development.
