NORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE

How does one determine their normal blood pressure? When giving consideration to blood pressure it is important to have a number of measurements. A single reading might simply be a result of issues at the point in time of the measurement. There are a number of reasons why one could at any time have a high reading which may not be a good indicator of suffering from high blood pressure.
  • MANY FACTORS AFFECT BLOOD PRESSURE
Oftentimes, readings taken at a doctor’s office might result in a reading higher than what one normally would expect. It is not unusual for nerves or other reasons to come in to play. On most occasions, one has a blood pressure measurement only as the result of being at the doctor’s office. This usually is the result of some other health issue. Anxiety could contribute to a high reading as a result.
MEASURE AND MONITOR
The most important thing you can do about your blood pressure is to measure and monitor it. Although this is a very easy task it is not something done well. One can find a number of kiosks in many retail stores that provide an opportunity to measure blood pressure for a modest fee. Generally, most of us only do this when we occasion upon such a device. And then we most likely do not record the measurement and tend to rely on our memory for what the reading was. This violates the real necessary need to monitor change over a period of time.
YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF
Blood pressure machines can be purchased for some $50 or less depending upon their capability. This seems like a fairly modest sum inasmuch as it can be used by all members of the family.
Some will even detect an irregular heartbeat. It is reported that many, many people with an irregular heartbeat are not aware of it. The author is a classic example of one who had atrial fibrillation and was not aware of it until an ischemic transient act (mini stroke) took place. It is highly recommended that families begin to check for normal blood pressure. It is often recommended for anyone over eighteen years of age. And don’t forget to log it in.
PREVENT AND RETARD
Even more important than measuring your blood pressure would be to take some important steps to prevent it or retard its continued increase. If you smoke, or drink more than two drinks a day for men (one for women), stop doing so. Make sure you eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, reduce the stress in your life and get out and get some exercise. Hey, nobody said it would be as easy as a walk in the park. But for most people, once they begin to do these things it becomes habit forming. Oh, and really watch your weight. If you don’t have one pick up a good digital scale somewhere. It shouldn’t cost you more than $20.
Ideally, it is expected that systolic pressure (top number) should be less than 120 mmHG. The diastolic pressure (bottom number) should be less than 80 mmHG.
Should your measurements be repeatedly high or low, and at the same time you feel any symptoms it would be important to take some appropriate action. You would want to once again have a normal blood pressure reading.
