VITAMIN D FOR FLU

VITAMIN D
Vitamin D for flu has the advantage of providing protection for more than just flu. There are many other factors that result in most of the respiratory infections.

Taking vitamin d for flu assists your immune system. While many depend upon acquiring their needed vitamin d from the sun, that source drops dramatically during the winter. The body does not have the ability to produce this important vitamin so it must be acquired from other sources, especially during the flu season.


PNEUMONIA AND FLU VACCINE


Many of the thousands of deaths that are accredited to flu each year are from complications such as bacterial pneumonia. Often proponents of flu shots tout how it prevents deadly influenza and saves lives. For the most part however, miseries of the flu are not prolonged and usually not serious.

That is not the case for those who suffer from bacterial pneumonia. And contrary to popular belief, flu vaccine does prevent nor cure bacterial pneumonia.

An interesting study in The Lancet showed that the risk of pneumonia for those over 65 was not lowered. More interesting it was noted that those who were vaccinated for flu had higher pneumonia rates. So, is flu a primary cause of pneumonia? Or is it possible that the vaccine is ineffective? It was noted that the study was for people not living in assisted living facilities. Other research would show that flu shots might be helpful for them.


RAMP UP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

You do not want to go through the flu season without taking preventive action. You should take enough vitamin D for flu to offset the lower levels normally experienced in the winter. It is interesting to note that we do not have a “flu season” during the summer months when vitamin D is more readily available for those who spend enough time outdoors.
Generally speaking it is thought that adults need some 2,000 to 5,000 IU per day to achieve a blood level in the 50-80 ng/mL range of vitamin d. Other studies have suggested that vitamin d shows positive benefits for treating flu. Some have had some positive results by taking a daily dose of 50,000 IU
for seven days. Taking vitamin d has been shown to be perfectly safe, even at the higher dose for seven days. Any higher dose levels should only be taken under the care of a physician.


OTHER SUPPLEMENTS

You could not go wrong by taking a good, multivitamin and mineral supplement. One rich in antioxidants can offer preventive benefits. An additional boost to the immune system can be achieved with probiotics.

An extra dose of vitamin C and Echinacea, as well as colostrums can provide immune boosters for those who get sick. The immune syrup “Sambucus” uses a combination of elderberry, Echinacea, zinc propolis and vitamin C. Using these supplements need to be taken at the first sign of flu to be effective.
